With the onset of fall, it is time for me to go live with social media, and sharing fun articles and information towards my love (speech-language pathology). It is also time- as the days get shorter, and the work gets harder (does anyone else feel like fall into winter is a stressful time-?), to remember to promote self-love and self-care. Being in the helping profession, I know all too well about the effects of burnout, giving too much, and leaving too little in the reserve. Knowing-and acting- are two different levels of cognitive ability, and I am working really hard on acting in accordance with what I know to be true.
Here are the rules I have learned about self-care, I hope you find at least one of them helpful!
- It’s okay to say ‘no.’ Really- IT’S OKAY.
- It’s okay to take time for yourself- in fact, it’s completely necessary.
- Time time each day to be mindful- savor the moment that you’re in, savor the people that you’re with, and imprint the memory of what being mindful feels like. We are so busy rushing from point A to point B that we forget to enjoy the distance….
- Take time each day to move- whatever that means to you. Workout, run, walk, bike…just MOVE. It’s good for the heart, brain, and body.
- Find 5 minutes to connect each day with someone you have been meaning to- but just haven’t. Social media enables us to feel like we are in touch with everyone, but a phone call or direct message can really give us a better connection.
- Laugh. Laugh daily. Find the humor in your errors, and have faith through the tough times.
That’s it for now, but stay tuned for more…
